June 2019 Update
1946 Cadillac Series 62 Rail Car
West Virginia Railroad Museum
Restoring a Beautiful Piece of Railroad History
By: Bryan & Johnette Totten
The restoration of the Western Maryland Railway Car #6, 1946 Cadillac Rail Car Project, is a unique undertaking, recreating an authentic rail car as it appeared over 63 years ago. Restoration began March 9th, 2019 by volunteers when the car was moved from its long-time storage location in Beverly, West Virginia to B&B Auto in Elkins, West Virginia.
As restoration began sadly many areas of the car were more deteriorated than the initial assessment reflected. It has also been discovered that much of the side chrome and stainless trim has been lost or misplaced during moves from one location to another. The remaining chrome/stainless pieces have been sent off for estimates on straightening, polishing and rechroming.
To date all of the doors, deck lid, hood, and quarter panel extensions have been removed and repaired. The quarter panels, fenders, and main body still has to be finished. The trunk area and inner fenders were badly hacked at the time of transformation in the Cumberland shops and will need to be addressed.
Are you a boy scout? Do you know a boy scout? The WVRRM is happy to help boy scouts earn their Railroad Merit Badge! Refer to your Boy Scout Handbook for up-to-date requirements for the badge.
Some might say that you can study anything in college. Well, that has become a little more true here in Elkins, WV. It is only appropriate that in a town built by the railroads you can find a Minor in Railroad Heritage Tourism at our local college. For more information please contact:

*The WVRRM is helping our friend Mr. Porterfield by promoting this unique opportunity for students going into heritage tourism, history, and other related fields. We do not benefit from applications to this program or college.
While your visiting stop and snap a selfie, or a group shot, with our C&O conductor! The picture below features our AFNHA AmeriCorps Service Member!
The WVRRM is officially open for the 2019 Season!
Join us today (4/27) for the Grand Opening of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Exhibit. This year we are happy to debut two new activities to better engage with our exhibit. The first is an Activity Packet for kids. They can follow Chessie’s paw prints to find interesting facts, fill out a C&O crossword, and color!
The second activity is the AFNHA Heritage Site Passport. You can become a History Hunter by visiting 6 local museums. Find the answer on each location’s page, get it signed by the front desk, and you get a History Hunter button! We are excited for the opportunity to kick off this new program that helps our visitors explore the many facets of Appalachian heritage!
Is there another perk to visiting the WVRRM? Yes! You can take home a WVRRM 2019 souvenir card that you get to stamp with an official C&O Company Seal!
We look forward to meeting you this summer!

This Wednesday three of our volunteers had the great pleasure of visiting The Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society in Clifton Forge, Va. It was great time getting to see the Archives and Museum and getting to know our new friends. WVRRM is very excited to work with COHS on our 2019 Exhibit. To learn more about COHS you can visit their website. (cohs.org).
For the 2018 season, we are happy to present an exhibit on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in West Virginia! Come visit us to see a display of photos, artifacts, and more on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
